Improve driver performance now

by Louise Cole - 10 Jan, 2024

A release came out this week saying that electrification was a top priority for CV fleets, in particular those running LCVs. However, there is lots of fleets can do before they change to electric vehicles, and some stuff which is essential if we want this to be a safe and smooth transition.

The first is to minimise send on carbon-based fuels by really monitoring and coaching drivers on smooth driving with good anticipation. This will have huge financial benefits, including lowering liability, incidental damage, and repair costs as well as fuel.

More importantly, the fleets which are finding the move to electric vehicles most effective are those who had already invested in ensuring driving performance which is best suited to electric vehicles. Smooth, easy on the accelerator and brake, reacting well in advance to distant hazards, and keeping speeds lower than the limit and steady.

This has five key benefits for EV transition:

  • It maximises range
  • It mitigates the abrupt effects of linear torque
  • It protects your investment
  • It prepares drivers to go more slowly and cautiously, because the lack of noise can mask the vehicle's speed.
  • It helps to protect vulnerable road users, who are arguably more at risk from near silent and ver nippy vehicles.

Don't put all your decarbonisation emphasis on leasing shiny EVs. Also make sure you use telematics and a whole-management approach to producing really good drivers. It will pay dividends.
